9 Creative Ways to Celebrate Valentine's Day in a Long-Distance Relationship

By Brittany Loeffler on February 7, 2018

They say that distance makes the heart grow fonder. This may be true, until Valentine’s Day rolls around. When you’re in a long-distance relationship, Valentine’s Day is just another reminder that the two of you aren’t together. You may feel that it’s impossible to celebrate the holiday and decide to mope around as you see other couples celebrate.

Well, it’s time to get creative and celebrate Valentine’s Day with your significant other. No matter how far apart you are, you can still have a lovely day to celebrate your love for each other.

Have a Skype Date

Today’s technology has made it much easier for couples to be in a long-distance relationship. With texting, Snapchat, and video chatting, you can still be a part of your significant other’s day.

This Valentine’s Day, schedule a Skype date. It can be a dinner date where you both make and eat the same thing. You can also have a movie date. Put on the same movie and stay on Skype with each other while watching it. You may not be able to feel them physically there, but at least you can still spend some time with them this way.

Send Them a Gift

Surprise your significant other with a gift on Valentine’s Day. It doesn’t have to be super expensive. It just has to be thoughtful. Make sure you time it just right so that it will be delivered on Valentine’s Day. It’s a sweet gesture and is a creative way to celebrate when in a long-distance relationship.

Send Them Flowers and Chocolate

Plan a full day of surprises for your loved one on Valentine’s Day. Have little surprises pop up throughout their day. When they are at work, have flowers and chocolates delivered to them. It’s something they won’t expect and will make their day.

Send a Handwritten Love Letter

Do something a little old fashioned and send them a handwritten love letter on Valentine’s Day. With most of our communication done over the computer or through texting, it’s refreshing to have something physical to hold and read again and again from someone we love. Pour your heart out and let them know just how much you love them.

Spray some of your perfume or cologne on the letter so they can remember what you smell like. If you’re feeling super romantic, write a bunch of letters for them to open at different times. It can be when they are feeling sad or angry or when they are missing you. This way your words will always be with them.

Order Their Favorite Meal

Having their favorite meal delivered to their house is a creative way to celebrate Valentine’s Day. Show them just how much you know what they like by ordering their favorite meal from their favorite restaurant and having it delivered.

Have them do the same thing for you. Once both of your meals are delivered, get on Skype and have a dinner date. Voila! You both bought each other dinner for Valentine’s Day.

Postpone Valentine’s Day

Who says that you have to celebrate your love for each other on February 14th? Nobody! Plan to celebrate Valentine’s Day at a later date when the two of you get to see each other. There’s no shame in pushing it back a little.

It is still important to call each other on Valentine’s Day and cut out some quality time to talk to them, though.

Make Them a Gift

Homemade gifts are super thoughtful. Instead of spending money on something expensive, spend some time making them a personalized and unique gift. This can be a scrapbook of all your favorite memories with each other. You can also make a collage of your favorite pictures for them to hang up on their wall. Or, go old school and make them a mixtape of songs that remind you of them.

Post a Throwback Photo

As you scroll through Instagram, you may notice that everyone is posting pictures of their Valentine’s Day dates. Don’t let this make you feel left out! Post your favorite photo of you and your significant other and write a nice description of how much you love them. Show off just how cute the two of you are and brag about how you’re making long-distance work. It’s something to be proud of.

Surprise Them

If you can swing it, surprise them at their house or at work. Depending on just how far away you two live, this is a surprise that they will remember forever. Just make sure it won’t affect your responsibilities too much.

How Will You Celebrate?

So, how will you celebrate Valentine’s Day if you’re in a long-distance relationship? Send them a gift or surprise them with flowers. Schedule a Skype date and watch a new movie together. Order them their favorite takeout food. There are so many things that you can do!
